Wilfrid Cumbermede is a tale of brotherhood, young love, and spiritual searching. One of MacDonald’s strangest and most atmospheric tales, it follows the fortunes of Wilfrid and his best friend Charley (whose respective outlooks are shaped by a noble uncle and a religiously oppressive father) as they navigate the challenges of boyhood and youth–all in the shadow of the majestic Moldwarp Hall and its tangled web of history.  It was after reading this novel (naked, under the willows at “Parson’s Pleasure”) that C. S. Lewis wrote “I know nothing that gives me such a feeling of spiritual healing, of being washed, as to read G. MacDonald.”
