She is modelled in part on the author’s friend, the great English social reformer Octavia Hill, who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the poor of London. This inspiring story, first published in 1882, recounts Hester’s fortunes as she faithfully follows her calling and brings light to others in the darkest of places.
