Paul Faber, Surgeon is the compelling sequel to Thomas Wingfold, Curate and the second book of the Wingfold trilogy. Having wrestled with doubts about his calling, Thomas Wingfold is now a powerful preacher to whom others turn for help. But one woman with a haunting trouble seems far beyond his aid, and her grief only deepens when she marries the local surgeon–a man who shares none of Wingfold’s convictions, and who would gladly rid the world of the religion which he has forsworn…
If you’ve read this far in the trilogy, be sure to check out the final instalment, There and Back.

As some of you have heard me talk about before
This book holds a special place in my heart.
GM treats a non believer fairly and intelligently.
So much of modern pop Christianity storytelling props up poorly drawn or idiotic unbelievers and then knocks the straw man to the ground and declares victory. While this is satisfying to the believer as an audience it is a huge roadblock to the unbeliever. By and large the non believers I know don’t resemble the ones in media I see.
They aren’t treated with respect or reality and this makes it far to easy to dismiss what kernels of truth they might glean, and certainly don’t paint believers in a good light where truth and love are concerned.
GM, on the other hand, paints a very real man in this novel. Imperfect but a good man, trying hard to navigate the world and the situations in front of him. There is no pretty bow to tie it all up in a neat sanitized package. There is evil cruelty in the world in this one too. Some purposeful and some incidental as many evils are.
You like Paul, you could be friends with Paul, you could debate without rancor and still maintain good fellowship with Paul.
If you haven’t met Paul yet I strongly urge you to pop this one into your tbr
You’ll be glad you did
